Native (natural occurrence limited to a few counties located primarily along a NW-SE axis across Indiana from Fountain County to Jefferson County; introduced in other counties). This tree appears similar to pine in overall shape, but flat needles are borne singly on little stalks. Two parallel white lines occur on the bottom surface of the needles. Cones are small, about an inch long. This is a common tree of forests further north (immortalized in the poem Hiawatha). Poison hemlock of Socrates fame is another plant altogether.
