Member of the Carrot (Apiaceae) family. Found in rich woods during May - August, blooms June - July. Flowers are greenish yellow, 5-parted, inflorescence an irregular, compound umbel with 12-25 flowers per umbellet, female flowers stalked. It is a perennial herb growing to1 - 3 feet tall. Leaves are 3-5 parted into a palm-like shape with sharp, sometimes deep teeth; stalks getting shorter toward top. Fruit is dry, rounded, hooked bristles weak and very small, splitting into 2 seeds. Grows in wooded areas in shade.
