Member of the Polygonaceae family. Pennsylvania smartweed reaches a height of 1-5 feet, and grows in moist areas across much of the United States. Its leaves are lanceolate in shape and arranged alternately on the stem. Stem is green in color with red patches, with ocreas surrounding petiole/stem junctions. Tightly clustered inflorescences of pink or white flowers form on the upper stems of the plant. Pennsylvania smartweed blooms from June-October.
