False (or Smooth oxeye) sunflower is a member of the Asteraceae or Aster family. It is a perennial plant found June - October in moist open woods, prairie remnants and along roadsides. False Sunflower has a tendency to form colonies. False Sunflowers have fertile ray flowers, with forked pistils, in addition to fertile disk flowers, while in true sunflowers only the disk flowers produce seeds. The term helianthoides means "sunflower-like."
