An early bloomer found often as early as February, but may be seen through May; found in woods growing to about 4-9 inches. It is a tiny member of the Carrot (Apiaceae) family, growing from a round tuber. Leaves 1 or 2, divided into narrow- oval or lobed segments. There are leafy bracts at the base of small, few-rayed umbels. It is also commonly called "salt and pepper" due to the tiny white flowers with prominent, red-brown anthers.
