Species of this genus are notoriously difficult to tell apart but all produce thorns on branches and crab-apple-like fruits in the fall. The genus is in the rose family, which also contains apples and pears. Hawthorns are often planted as landscape trees. Their fruits provide good food for birds and other wildlife.
